This ABSOLUT ‘Hugs’ Spot  debuted during the Grammy’s, it was the the first-ever spirits brand commercial on the Awards show! also this spot is special because an ad in this category appeared on CBS prime time programming in certain major markets. Ew, I am happy I don’t have to touch, kiss or hug strangers in return for operating in this world but a great concept for this century. ‘In An ABSOLUT World’ boasted thoughtful creative and a wicked soundtrack by the soulful voice of Louis Armstrong in a time when advertisers are pulling back.

    Worldwide Creative Director: Mark Figliulo

Axe is taking their creative direction in a new way, a la how can we make men appear irresistible yet again? Best spot from axe yet in my opinion, it features a bony teenager who sprays the product, ditches being human alogether and turns into an irresistible chocolate man(take note the UK version plays a different soundtrack). Axe spray deodorant ads have actually been banned in India.

    chris brown

He’s 19, he’s talented, he’s in trouble and he’s ditched by Wrigley. Wrigley will suspend all advertising that features R&B Chris Brown, who is charged with making criminal threats. The campaign is officially on hold. Remember his song ‘Forever’? the chorus includes elements of the gum’s theme song and the purpose of the gum endorsement was to help bolster Doublemint’s image.

Love Tavelocity’s gnome mascot, so I’m pleased he is still alive in their new bid for vactioners in tough economic times. TV ads are seeing a large pull back due to the recession of course. Hyundai even made a promise to customers that they can return their new car if they loose their income (job) in the next year.

Is viral effective? – Lately their has been quite a bit of talk about making your brands message ‘go viral’. It is a continuous push for most who work in pr and digital marketing. I have to agree, viral is an effect, not a strategy.

Bloggers report on the latest viral mishap: Queensland Tourism. QT launched an offering to get a dream job earning $150,00 a year blogging from a beautiful tropical island (applicants had to submit a video). The idea was so contagious it went viral from the start and the PR surrounding the launch spread globally, resulting a crash on the co website due to major traffic flow.

Now to the spot above, an artistic and lulling promo for Wustenrot bank (rare for a bank to have a less indirect approach to convey their brand). Created by Tony Peterson Film in Germany.

    Slide FunSpace

Before I post the latest from a series that Ashton Kutcher’s company Katalyst Media is promoting, I came across an interesting article on left brain and right brainers in the advertising world by Al Ries (marketing professional and author & co-founder of Atlanta-based consulting firm Ries & Ries). If you are working on the creative side I strongly recommend a read through here.

Now to the new web series (first ep airs today) on Facebook by Katalyst Media. Facebook users are going to get a look into actor Ashton Kutcher’s work life in a behind-the-scenes reality series through a Facebook App called Slide FunSpace.

The series is called “KatalystHQ,” a very semi-scripted portrayal of life at a Hollywood production company where the boss is, big surprise here, Ashton Kutcher. Remember the office? Amazing series, so is this the younger, goofier version? AK comments: “What we are trying to do with the show is take the everyday inner workings of an office and elevating that to push the comedy of mundane day-to-day activities.”

    C’mon, what makes it different?

Well it is a celebrity-backed web series, no? only difference is the way it is distributed…through an application on the popular social network Facebook called FunSpace, created by Slide. The show is underwritten initially by Frito-Lay’s Cheetos brand.

“Our target demo for this is 18-34, just out of high school or college and getting into the world world,” he said. “The traditional thing of eyeballs-for-dollars changes when you enter into a social fabric where people are engaging with each other.”

The Herbert brothers’ Doritos spot topped the consumer generated ‘Ad Meter’. The ‘Free Doritos,’ spot cost $2,000 to make, showcases two guys and a tacky looking snow globe that can predict the future and grant wishes by throwing it. “Unfortunately during the Super Bowl, what makes people smile is schoolyard humor, often sophomoric,” says Bruce Horovitz, USA Today staff writer and Ad Meter guru. Mainly, the public enjoyed watching the spot because of its sponteniety factor.

Saw one of your favorite Super Bowl ads last night? You can head to AdAge for a look at the complete collection.

My favorite spot is the one posted above, watch Conan O’Brien get convinced by Hollywood execs to sign onto to a commercial for big bucks (only to be seen in Switzerland). A good laugh since you know this happens all the time…but yes, devastating for poor CO.
