On the tails of Pepsi’s new logo and optimism campaign (TBWA), the bevco is heading to..big surprise…Washington! for next week’s inauguration festivities. AdAge describes pepsi posting messages like “All for One” and “Yes You Can” on buildings, street teams, billboards, buses and public transportation centres around the city. The interesting part is that Pepsi is offering individuals the opportunity to submit videos as part of an open multimedia letter to the new administration. At RefreshEverything, it seems the “Dear Mr. President” vids range from idiotic to bearable to hilarious.

Saks Fifth Avenue released their design for their Spring 2009 ‘Want It’ Campaign.

To promo the collection, Saks hired Shepard Fairey (he is also the designer of the Obama poster during his campaign). I love the colours, imagery and the we can do it attitude…wait, remember the famous print campaign during the high unemployment of the Depression? The We Can Do It! poster created by J. Howard Miller in 1943… may have been some inspiration.

Before you take a look at this creative spot from JWT NY, I encourage you to check out Creativity’s Top 5. The Microsoft spot above also comes courtesy of Creativity, it depicts an interview with Katie Bayne, Chief marketing officer at Coca-Cola North America. Her words are matched to animated images. Katie was named among the 100 Most Influential People in Sports (coke spent roughly $90 million at the Beijing Olympics).

So the Bessies are coming up and just to recap…since 1963, the Bessies has been recognizing the finest in Canadian television advertising, a period almost as long as the history of commercial TV itself. The Bessies is an annual TV commercial competition organized by the Television Bureau of Canada in conjunction with the Broadcast Executives Society. Straight from the horse’s mouth (oh and this year you can upload your spots online).

Also, a new third category for the 2009 Bessies Awards has been announced and will feature a new ‘Integrated Campaigns category’ in both TV and the Internet.
TVB President Theresa Treutler responded, “Everyone felt very strongly that it was time for a change that reflects what’s happening in the marketplace from an advertising standpoint, and recognizing the way people consume media”.

This year’s theme is “What will they say about you?”
The awards show takes place May 21 2009 at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

Fox Searchlight hired Jamal Woolard, a Brooklyn-based rapper, to play the late rap icon Biggie Smalls in its upcoming biopic Notorious, release date is set for Jan 16th 09 in the US.

Back in 1995 St. Ides (manufactured by Pabst Brewing Co.) threw up an intense National urban marketing campaign to promote their brew. Notorious B.I.G is shown in this TV spot pushing the 40 oz of St. Ides, marketing to youth in and out of the hood. For a time period, the public got to keep “ill” posters at every liquor store in the hood free with a 40 oz purchase.

    Other rappers that co-signed: Dr.Dre, Snoop & 2Pac, Ice Cube & King T.

    Brand: St.Ides Malt Liquor

Lil Wayne graces his vocals in the new Gatorade spot, he adds his often husky and nondescript sound as a voice-over for the semi-controversial Gatorade spot. Well, more talked about because of the elusive factor…the commercial spot revealed itself on Jan 1st as a new rebrand attempt. Some say the ‘G’ spot does not present enough recognition to affiliate consumers to the Gatorade brand but others say conversation has started and that is really half the battle, no?

Sports figures featured in the spot include: Dwyane Wade, Serena Williams, Bill Russell, Derek Jeter and Muhammad Ali and more…

    Brand: Gatorade
    Agency: Omnicom Group’s TBWA/Chiat/Day

I came across an interesting campaign. Internet-based travel provider Expedia in Germany wanted to promote their low cost flight deals to Italy while publicizing them in a subtle manner.

What get’s more Italian than the cappuccino?
Expedia teamed up with coffee shop Deli Star to create a unique new advertising medium: foaming, fluffy milk. Stencils were distributed to all of the branches and when customers ordered a cappuccino, the server would place the stencil over the milk froth and shake the chocolate powder over the top. The offer would remain on top of the foam! Also, underneath the coffee cup there was a paper coaster printed with Expedia.de’s details and text.

Due to sensational feedback, the Italian campaign will be repeated this year.

    Brand: Expedia
    Region: Germany
