Cannes adds PR to the roster

The Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival is adding PR to the mix for 2009!

I am quite pleased about this news.

The dubbed’the world’s most prestigious advertising awards show’ has introduced a public relations competition for the 56th annual festival to “honour the creative use of reputation management.”

Lord Tim Bell, chairman of Chime Communications, will chair the PR jury with the inaugural PR Lions handed out on Monday, June 22, alongside the Direct and Promo Lions.

“Launching PR at Cannes has been on our radar for quite a while, and as with any new category we introduce, it takes time to prepare the standard we expect and [the standard that] is expected of us,” said Philip Thomas, festival CEO, in a release. “The time is now right, and we are extremely honoured to have Lord Tim Bell chair the first PR Lions jury.”

Categories for the PR competition will include:
-Sector-related PR
-Product & service
-Technique

Entries rewarded for:

-Strategy
-Creativity
-Originality
-Execution
-Results

Bell said he was “honoured” to chair the first ever PR jury. “This new category will greatly enhance the celebration of communications that is Cannes Lions and will further elevate the recognition of reputation management within our industry.”
